In every field there are famous folks who have become cult figures, from rock 'n roll, to fashion, to sports, to science, to TV, etc.

Tango is among the worst, because everyone has his own style/preference/ideas of how to dance. "You dance who you are," means that there is not just one way to dance, thank goodness. But searching for the right way for YOU to dance can be like following the Holy Grail with one wrong turn after another; like trailing after glamour stars of tango, hoping some of the glitter will fall on you by propinquity.

Students and wannabees look often for quick fixes and "Argentine Tango in 10 Easy Lessons." One of our students told us about a "tango boot camp" in their country where you can learn to dance tango "well" in a weekend or even one day!

Well, sorry to disappoint, but this can't happen. Tango takes its time. I don't care who your teachers are or what they promise before you plunk down your money or how many hours you practice in a weekend; you've got to put in your time. Tango has to "cook" within you.

Often because of media fame or cults of personalities, some dancers are worshiped, not so much for what they do (which can be good or bad or several degrees in between) but who they are. Generally these are dancers who tour outside of Argentina, either performing and/or giving workshops.

The great social dancers of Buenos Aires just dance night after night in the milongas; they don't speak English, they have never left Argentina, no one has starred them in a movie, they haven't won or even entered tango contests, and they haven't danced in a stage show.

When hero worship makes cult personalities of tango dancers, it's usually because of marketing; the media and especially YouTube can make a star of anyone. But if all you know of a person is what you are told by advertising, and what you read/see on the internet or at long distance in a huge tango workshop, perhaps that person doesn't deserve the gifts lavished on them when foreigners bribe them to rub elbows during their trips to Buenos Aires from lands far away. And even more to the point, do not deserve adoration.

I guess I'm getting somewhat cynical after so many years of working with tango, and above all, observing what goes on. Foreign dancers wine and dine the objects of their hero affection, and spend a boatload of plata on private lessons and buying drinks in the milongas, and always paying the taxi. That's fine, really; the foreign dancer gets what he wants--a little prestige to hobnob with the famous and an ability to name drop, and the Tango Star gets free meals, gifts, and more hours of private lessons. There's nothing wrong with that; it can be a friendly recognition that the visiting students probably can afford to do those things more than the locals. The problem begins when it turns to hero worship, when the star can do no wrong on or off the pista.

It's always been hard to separate the dancer from the dance. But worshiping false idols by throwing money at them, especially when the person involved is an extremely bad example of how to behave--meaning not following common rules of etiquette and not being a caballero (yes, I'm referring here especially to men), makes everything bad for everyone except the "hero" who is getting rich off of a false reputation of being a fabulous dancer, teacher, and a perfect person.

I have had occasion to know well a couple of famous touring tango dancers/teachers and they both made fun in private conversations of the foreigners they profited from.

We've all heard the story of Pablo Veron's fisticuffs with a woman at a New York milonga.

And the extremely famous contest winner who socked a woman in the eye when she inadvertently nudged him on the dance floor as he was walking to his table. She had to ice her face and leave the milonga. Ruben and I were dancing right next to this incident in Los Consagrados about a year ago. This is the same famous dancer who announced to his table of friends that no foreigner could ever dance like an Argentine--and he makes his living off of teaching foreigners.

I've heard about the really bad attitude of a famous dancing couple while giving workshops in Australia--leaving the room, paying attention only to each other, etc.

And tales of many male tango teachers seducing their hostesses while being housed for workshops.

Is this professional behavior? Is this worthy of adoration? Or is it all part of the Tango Game?

Some dancers haven't a clue how to teach. Some can't handle the fame and fortune that came to them late in life. Some are just "bad" people who can dance well. And some are ego maniacs with no respect for those who respect them.

But there's something a bit "immoral" about worshiping so-called heroes who behave badly. We can admire their talent--the way they play football or golf, or the way they dance. And that is what should be appreciated, not the whole package of a low-down rude, haughty, superior s.o.b.

Famous tango dancers are famous mainly due to good luck and marketing. If you like the way someone dances, by all means study how they dance. But don't waste your adoration on folks who probably would not take you to the E.R. at 2:00 a.m., especially if you were no longer paying them for privates or inviting them to restaurants.

You can have good professional relationships with your tango teachers and you can have good friends. Only rarely are they one and the same (yet it can and does happen.)

In the States, everyone is our "friend." "I'd like to introduce my friend, Bill," you say to Norm, but you've only known Bill a day. We all have many "friends." In Spanish they differentiate between "amigo" and "conocido," which I think is a great thing to do. In English we rarely use "acquaintance," because everyone is our "friend."

Maybe it's time to think who really is our friend and who is our tango teacher and who is such a perfect person he/she is worthy of worship.

The surveys on the old MILONGUEROS of Buenos Aires are now closed. I want to thank the many women who participated. Your answers will help me as I go forward with my third memoir about the eleven years I lived in Argentina. Of course my book is not a scientific study, or an anthropological report, but my personal experiences there. The survey answers help me to understand the machista culture through the eyes of others.

I got some funny replies, by the way. One person wrote, "This survey is utter crap." And, "Why are only females invited to complete this survey? It is discriminatory." I love it. All answers were completely anonymous so I have no idea who any responders were or where they're from, but more serious replies are useful. Thanks again to one and all who took the time to answer.
<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "inherit" , "serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Courier; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">I need your help
to paint an accurate portrait of these mysterious, somewhat controversial
beings, the milongueros, who are rapidly disappearing. I'm not
interested in their names, biographies, or how they dance--their characters are
what I want to explore in my book. Of course, as in my first two memoirs, there will be lots of my own personal experiences. It's the end of a very special epoch and I want to, well, not document because I won't use real names, but I want to preserve the recollections of the women who danced with them.

<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "inherit" , "serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Courier; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">By definition in my book, a
"milonguero" is old--he has grown up in the milongas, never taken a
tango lesson, probably learned by watching with help from his dad, uncle, or
brother, never had a regular job or profession and worked part time in some
menial field, and went every night to the milongas where he danced all night. He had to wear a suit and his shoes had to be
polished or he wasn't allowed in. Long ago it was a pejorative term. Therefore by this definition there is no such
thing as a "young milonguero" or even a "milonguera." In
the olden days women just didn't hang out alone every night at milongas unless
they were working girls. Today "milonguero" just means someone who goes to milongas several nights a week.

Dios mio, tangocherie is back! This time from Hollywood!

I have missed you all, believe me, while I've been trying to reconstruct my life here in Los Angeles. It feels good to be posting again--I only hope some of my readers and fans are still around. Maybe I can interest some new folks as I will also post on Facebook, the social media that loves to be hated.

I wanted to share my big news that the third book in my memoir series, MILONGUERO, is now in the works. You may remember THE CHURCH OF TANGO and its prequel, ARABESQUE.

I will be posting a survey for tangueras who have been to Buenos Aires to help me with a broader picture than my own experience and the stories of my friends. Please help me by taking three minutes of your time to answer my questions.

I've missed you! Please comment, suggest, communicate--in whatever language you are comfortable.
UN BESO ENORME A TODOS!
I want to thank you for
your support and friendship all these years that I’ve lived outside of my
homeland. I left Los Angeles in 2001, and during those 13 years was only able
to visit my family and L.A. peeps every year or so. It has been an amazing
journey—I found not only love with Ruben Aybar, but a new profession as a
teacher of tango, as well as publishing a memoir about those expat years, The Church of Tango. And currently I’ve
just finished a prequel memoir, Arabesque:
Dancing on the Edge in Los Angeles, which will be released soon. (You can check out what's happening at www.MirasolPress.com.

Even though it is my choice, my heart is breaking to leave
Ruben, my pets and garden, my gorgeous rented apartment in Boedo that has seen
so much tango and so many asados and friendly gatherings on its broad, scenic
terrace. To leave the life that I've built here over 11 years.

Ruben will continue teaching and taxi dancing. He can be
contacted at 155-799-2038. Working with him to share our tango vision with enthusiastic
students has been my greatest pleasure here in Argentina. (He doesn’t check his
email very often—rubentango@gmail.com,
but contacting him via Facebook works too.) He is an amazing teacher, and a
warm-hearted, generous, honest person. I hope one day he can get a visa to visit the U.S. for a couple of weeks, his dream--and mine too. I want so much for him to see my country, at least my home town of L.A., and meet my friends and family. He has no desire to live there--after all, he has thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren of his own in Buenos Aires. And so he understands my need now to be with mine.
Milongas open and close all the time in Buenos Aires. We went to the inauguration of the Yunta de Oro Milonga at La Nacional last night to check it out but also to hear the fabulous orchestra, Los Herederos del Compas, who play in the style of D'Arienzo. An extra perk was the appearance of Osvaldo Ramos who was D'Arienzo's last singer, who can still croon out those great tangos. Plus the singer with Los Herederos is Pablo Ramos--his son, and when at the end of the program they sang together it was an emotional moment, I can tell you. When Ruben and I danced La Cumparsita after all of that, I could hardly keep the tears back. A fabulous Tango Moment of Tangasms.

These kinds of evenings can only be found in Buenos Aires. Maestro Osvaldo spoke about singing in this same salon in La Nacional fifty years ago, quite amazing to contemplate the history of those years. History and tradition are so important in the tango and the only place you find it is here, in Buenos Aires.

Whether the milonga will be a success on a weekly basis, who knows? As I said, milongas come and go here. But whatever happens, last night was unforgettable.
I'm asking you for a favor, dear readers. My new memoir, Arabesque: Dancing on the Edge in Los Angeles (a prequel to The Church of Tango), is nearing publication.

The Preface--Wings of Mercury, is available on CreateSpace, for reading, rating, and commenting. It's very short. This is the beginning of the book, and I hope it will make you want to keep reading, so if not, let me know at the bottom where you can answer two short questions about it. Thank you so much in advance for helping me make my story as good as it can be!

Recently I had the pleasure of being interviewed by radio host and tango DJ Ronaldo on his ground-breaking live radio broadcast and podcast of Tango Angeles on the Universal Broadcasting Network at the historic Sunset-Gower Studios in Hollywood. In between carefully selected recorded music, I answered questions about visiting Buenos Aires (and my tips for a great tango trip), my personal life journey that I related in my memoir, The Church of Tango, and my own story of Ruben's and my "Love in the Space of a Song," one in a continuing series on the program. There was also time to mention my new memoir due to be released soon, Arabesque: Dancing on the Edge in Los Angeles, as well as discussing the ever-controversial codigos and other tango topics.

It was an honor and a privilege to be on the show, the only English-language radio program, which airs every other week on Wednesdays at 6:00-8:00 p.m. Pacific Time. You can download the free podcasts of previous shows here from.iTunes. In between the chatting, Ronaldo plays some fantastic music and explains interesting points about the piece, orchestra, composer, and/or singer.

Meanwhile you can be part of the Tango Angeles community no matter where you live by liking its Facebook page.
There's nothing like it, folks! You haven't seen everything if you haven't been to Carnaval (Carnival) in Gualeguaychu, Entre Rios, Argentina.

Maybe you think it's like a parading Las Vegas show--almost naked girls in feathers marching with the occasional float, or like in Rio de Janeiro--highly commercialized floats and feathers, or New Orleans with its jazz and black culture roots. But El Carnaval del Pais en Gualeguaychu is a unique experience and well-worth a visit.

What I love most is seeing all of those feathers bouncing and boppin' up and down, and the floats too bounce with all the dancers on them. You can't help but be happy. The head and back pieces are enormously heavy, but the dancers dance! It's amazing. Kids constantly run through the groups giving gulps of water to everyone as they dance away. It was very hot on Saturday, January 18, when we were there, but even in heavy costumes (not all are semi-naked) they danced with great energy, vigor, and personality. The people in the bleachers dance right along, often standing on their chairs. The dancers often pose for photos with the audience. It is all very infectious.

But I also love the messages and stories.
At first glance it may appear it's all about girls and fun, but it is way more than that. Each comparsa, or club, has a theme and chances are the dark side is included. In fact, it's tradition that the devil is always a participant. The three comparsas that compete in 2012 are O'Bahia -- "Toys," Kamarr -- "Q.E.P.D." or R.I.P., begins with a funeral dirge for Momo, the king of fun who has been buried with dancing skeletons and zombies. Let's inter all the evil in history and bring back the joy of Carnaval! And the Papelitos--"Latidos," the rape of the Americas by Europe and the killing of the land by mechanization and commercialization--kinda heavy stuff--but so entertaining with all those feathers and dancing jaguars and trees and a ghost ship.
The floats are gigantic, pushed by tractors, and you wonder how they can navigate the narrow path with just inches to spare on either side. The smaller "floats" are pushed by one or two people.
2014 was our fourth time at Carnaval. Our first was in 2005, a turn-around trip in a small van (not recommended), when Ruben had a gallbladder attack on the way back to BsAs and someone else was drunk.

But the Carnaval part of the excursion was so fabulous that we made plans to go back a year or two later. This time we did it right and stayed in the loveliest place in town, next to the Rio Gualeguaychu and with the most beautiful swimming pool. You can also go in the spur of the moment and rent a room for the night from one of the many locals who hawk their homes on street corners.
The pretty little town full of very old buildings and 19th century architecture is a pleasant treeful and green place to walk and admire the full moon rising over the river. Even though the town hosts this extravaganza every year, there isn't a commercial atmosphere. One feels safe, as there is lots of security about, but the attitude is kind and hospitable without the drunken rudeness that often accompanies mass festivals and events. The town and the Carnaval are very family friendly.
Every Saturday in January and February, and the first Saturday in March, Carnaval takes place in the Corsodromo behind the antique railway station, with a parade of three "comparsas" (carnaval clubs) competing for the grand prize, the comparsas parade the 550 meter length of the Corsodromo for an hour each. (My advice: sit at the beginning in the first sectors to eliminate much of the waiting and to finish earlier.) It begins around ten or ten-thirty but go early and eat at one of the many parrillas on the grounds or if you sit in the Sector VIP you get table service.
This year my vote goes to the Papelitos for their political statement and the best batucada group of drummers and pasissta (lead dancer) ever, but I loved it all. <span style="font-family: "Batik Regular";">The following is the chapter on a trip to Buenos Aires from Aydan Dunnigan's memoir, Trauma to Tango. The book is a spiritual and psychological quest for wholeness after a childhood of abuse and a lifetime of floundering. He caroms from a Baptist youth to Born Again to being a Lutheran Pastor to a New Ager. The author uses tango as a metaphor, it is not the subject of the memoir. But this charming chapter is fun reading for anyone who has visited Buenos Aires to dance.

Our friends from the Edmonton tango community, Geoff and Susan, world travellers, had assured us that we could get by comfortably in Buenos Aires on $20 a day and a por favor. Always suckers for a good deal, we packed up our tango shoes and our Spanish-English phrase dictionary and set off on a pilgrimage to the Mecca of our new found religion. Twenty-four hours later, only slightly maimed, we hobbled off the plane into the mystical world of dance and romance, thrilled at the prospect of conquering a foreign culture and putting our tango expertise to the test.

Although no longer navigable at $20 per day, BA still remained quite a tourist bargain and we were enthralled with the elaborate architecture, the extravagant European craftsmanship, the plenitude of parks and roads that spread out forever, (one street, 32 lanes!). Getting around should have been easy with taxis outnumbering private vehicles, fares dirt cheap and drivers courteous and honest (although they all drove like Jaun Fangio wannabes).

The real challenge came in the communication. Our dusty old dictionary was just not up to the task, nor were we. Perhaps we travelled in different circles than our friends, but a por favor just would not cut it. Here in San Telmo, the heart of tango and a very authentic Argentine neighbourhood, English was as distant as a plate of salad greens in a parilla (a restaurant with a BBQ spit in the middle – a popular Argentine venue). The little Spanish we knew was apparently from some other continent and bore no familiarity to the street dialect and the distinctive Argentine Castellano, which often left us stuck on a street corner, not knowing how to ask directions, or standing stupified in front of a vendor with a line-up behind, haplessly trying to count out an undeciphered amount of change.

It was downhill from there. Before we had left Edmonton, I had made great pains to ensure that I would have email contact with my teens when I was away, so I had purchased a little laptop and brought along the proper power adaptors. One minor miscalculation. In Buenos Aires no one has home email. This is theoretically not a problem because at every street corner there is a telecommun-ications cafe that has phone service and internet access except that the Spanish keyboard is different and no matter what combination of keys I pressed I could not get the @ key to appear in my email address line. The shop owner apparently couldn’t understand my dilemma or didn’t care as I sat pathetically staring at a room full of computers and not able to use one of them. I was heartbroken.

Plan two: Call the only people we knew in Argentina who spoke English, our friends in Patagonia whom we were meeting later on in our trip. When I lifted the receiver, instead of a dial tone I got a thirty second taped message of more Castellano Spanish. Back to the desk clerk I went with the phone number in hand and asked him to dial. He had no more success than I did. Apparently the phone system was as unnavigable as the internet, even to the locals. (In truth, I don’t recall anyone having much more success with the phone system dialing out of region; there seemed to be a complicated series of codes that had to be cracked like the combination on a lock.)

I walked out a broken man, 10,000 miles from home with no way to make contact with anyone I loved or who cared about me. If we were to be mugged by a taxi driver and dropped off the end of a pier, (which we feared was going to happen at one point), no one would be any the wiser.

Off we went in search of a place to regain our composure, perhaps a quiet cafe for a good cup of coffee and some solitude. We were met at the door of a quaint out-of-the-way establishment by an elderly, elegantly dressed woman who greeted us formally in the textbook Spanish - the same Spanish that I had been studying for months prior but to this point had never been able to use. This was a homecoming! Someone whom we understood! The feeling was so overwhelming I walked in, went over into the corner and crumbled into a weeping, convulsing blob. Afraid that my hysteria might be contagious, Patricia and our proper, well-spoken host pulled away into the other room to address the task of ordering some coffee. As it turned out, this was not in fact a coffee shop but rather a chocolateria, with coffee merely a chaser for chocolates.

“No, no, we don’t want chocolates,” Patricia tried to explain, as we had been on a three day diet of meat and cheese, (the only menu item we knew how to order, served everywhere all the time). Her protestations were interpreted as wanting more chocolates and merely incited the woman’s eagerness to satisfy us. In desperation Patricia pulled out her dictionary with her spare hand, the other one carefully balancing the saucer of chocolates and coffee, and tried to find some phrases about ordering food. The only phrase she could come up with in our pathetically inadequate phrase dictionary was, “I would like to start with the onion soup, please.”

Pitching the dictionary, Patricia committed both hands to managing more chocolates while I slowly recovered from my convulsions in the corner and returned to normalcy. Apparently the emotional release was cathartic and after washing down our sweets with a shot of espresso we were ready to face the day again.

The agenda for that day was to make it to a milonga (tango dance). We had thoroughly researched the wheres and whens before we left Edmonton so again, presumably, we were well prepared. Not far from our residence was the Confiteria Ideal with the marble floor and pillars that often appear as a foil for the glitz of tango movies. Dressed theatrically in our dancing attire and pesos, maps and brochures in hand, we headed out onto to the street corner to flag down a taxi and direct him to our destination.

Another minor miscalculation. It was Sunday in Buenos Aires: there were huge political protests going on in the city centre. En route to our destination the traffic came to a complete halt. As our driver could take us no further we were asked for the fare and politely instructed to get out. Between us and our destination was a 30 lane highway, a park and a thick mob of protesters. Off we trekked dressed in our tango finery, Patricia balancing precariously in her high-heeled heels, and I in my Carlos Gardel fedora, trying to look as inconspicuous as two penguins.

By the time we made it to the Confiteria our shoes were muddied, we were exhausted, and our tango luster had thoroughly faded. Patricia, whose feet had been troubling her earlier, now was in no condition to be dancing. We plunked ourselves down at one of the tables and resigned ourselves to being spectators. After a seemingly interminable period of sitting on the sidelines, I determined that I was going to get in on the action. Since my partner was out of commission, this meant I was going to have to ply my trade on the open market and wade into the sea of experienced local dancers.

Tango etiquette, which I had properly researched, included numerous cultural anachronisms, all seemingly designed to protect the males inflated but fragile ego. One such customs was, if you wanted to dance with someone, you eyed her from across the room. If she reciprocated with eye contact it indicated that she was interested in your offer. In this discrete manner, a woman would gracefully accept or rebut a man’s offer without anyone else being any the wiser. The problem was that, without my glasses, I could barely determine the sex of a person from across the room, let alone whether she (or he) was returning eye contact.

I did exactly what any culturally insensitive, boorish Canadian would do in that circumstance. I brashly paraded down the sidelines and started propositioning the women who weren’t dancing. I was not one of those machismo Argentine tangeros who could not deal with rejection. I took blow after blow directly to the ego but continued to proceed down this line until, at the very end, an elderly woman with pink hair took pity on me.

Up we went on to the floor. After only a few steps into the dance this poor maligned woman began screaming at me, in Spanish of course. I had no clue what she was upset about and began vehemently defending myself in English, of which she couldn’t understood a word. I became desperate. My training in tangero folklore had made clear that if a woman walked out on you in the middle of a dance, I as a proper tangero, totally humiliated, would have to go out back and stab myself. (All tango violence is knife inflicted. They like their knives more than their lives.) So in the middle of the dance, in the centre of the dance floor we are squared off, she infuriated, I desperately pleading as if for my life. Fortunately she stuck the dance out and I lived to tell. Returning to the table devastated, Patricia attempted to console me, “At least you had the nerve to try.”

OK. Now we are at a serious impasse. I could accept the language barrier and that we could not be understood well enough to order a proper coffee without chocolates or something other than a plate of meat and cheese, but to not be understood on the dance floor with the universal language of dance was too much for me to come to terms with. Something was seriously askew. We needed help.

The next day our agenda was adjusted to include more tango lessons. Our host was also, conveniently, a dance instructor, so we booked a session. We showed her our stuff, fitting in all the kicks and pivots and spins we could manage, then stopped to accept praise.

Her muted compliment, “Well you sure know a lot of steps.” Another but. “But you are lacking in an energy connection.” She then wafted into an esoteric explanation about how we were to envision this ball of light between us which would guide and empower the dance. Patricia got all excited as this energy stuff apparently makes perfect sense to her. For me it was more confusing that the pink-haired lady screaming Spanish to me in the middle of the dance floor. See the energy, feel the energy. I come up short again. Apparently all that learning, all those lessons, amounted to nothing because I could not get the energetic connection. I was back on the dance floor at La Boheme desperately trying to be right here and not in front of myself or behind myself.

I start pulling threads together. Breathing, sensing the energy, leading with the chest, they all orbit around the heart chakra. I had been doing my classic disconnect, splitting my physicality into what happens from the waist down and the neck up and leaving the heart out of it altogether. According to this teacher, and contrary to the tango folklore, tango is not about studly men and slutty women doing sultry, seductive steps. It is all about the heart, the key element that I have been understandably, quite reluctant to embrace. Tango is a dance of love.

Am I up for this? Certainly love factors heavily into Patricia’s and my dance experience, (as it does with most everything we engage in). But to unabashedly parade my affections out onto the dance floor to share it indiscriminately with whomever my dance partner happens to be?

This question follows me deep into the night. As I drift into the Land of Nod familiar voices started up in conversation.

Carla Thackrah followed the Australian tango champions to Buenos Aires where they competed in the Tango Championships of 2007. Along the way they all learned what tango is in Buenos Aires--and what it isn't. There is footage of their practice, their time in local milongas, interviews (Ruben and I are in there dancing and speaking as well), and their final competition performance. Kudos to Carla for an excellent documentary well worth a watch for anyone curious about the tango in Buenos Aires. If you've danced here before, you'll probably see people you know in the milonga scenes.

We all love trains--the waiting, the leaving, the whistles. Who can hear the distant “woo-woo” of a train without feeling something…a longing, nostalgia, the urge to hop on and leave your old life behind? Literature abounds with romantic train symbols: The Polar Express, Streetcar Named Desire, Train to Nowhere, The Last Train Home. The same for tunnels, which can be passages to somewhere mysterious and unknown. Aren’t the words, “secret tunnel” exciting? Tunnels are a metaphor of life and death? Mystery and secrets? The birth experience, with light and life at the end?

And when there are trains in tunnels, well, in the old movies Hollywood movies during the moral censorship days of the Hayes Code, when a train went into a tunnel, the audience knew the stars were having sex.

Most people don’t find the subway so romantic. But taking the A line of the Buenos Aires subway is usually an opportunity for me to be transported to realms other than the stations of Peru, Piedras and Pasco.

The “A” line is the oldest in the Buenos Aires subway system, or Supte. Construction began in 1911 and opened to the public in 1913. It’s a short line of only 13 stations, beginning from the Plaza de Mayo. There the President’s Pink House and the Cathedral sit at right angles around a plaza full of history, monuments, protests, and souvenir stands hawking blue and white Argentine flags.

A couple of cars have been replaced, but generally when I ride to my Castellano class or to church, I take one of the original wooden cars. At times it’s almost a mystical ride, especially early in the morning or late at night. As I sit on the wooden slat benches, the train rocks me from side to side, the rings hanging from the ceiling swing hypnotically. The original incandescent lighting is still in use in old-fashioned glass shades, and the light glows on the wood, brass and beveled mirrors. These original cars have windows at both ends so you can see right through to the next car or to the black tunnel you have just left or into the one you are entering. The world up top seems so far away.During the day, cars passing over the grills on the street above, make daylight come and go as the train rumbles along in the dark tunnel.

Light in tunnels is a strong metaphor. During a series of site-specific dance performances in Los Angeles by Collage Dance Theater in the year 2000, abandoned subway tunnels from the 20’s were used in the work, SubVersions. A brilliant idea full of symbolism, dancers dug through rubble for lost hope, and waltzed as phantoms through the elegant art deco Terminal building. Finally they built a makeshift boat full of happy passengers waving goodbye, which was borne on shoulders, down the dark tunnel until its light disappeared.

Because tunnels are so appealing, wise businessmen around the world put the lure of exploring history underground to good use. In Seattle, Washington, a popular tourist attraction is a walking tour of the subterranean tunnels under Pioneer Square, once the main roadways and ground-floor storefronts of old downtown.

The abandoned silver mine shaft in Zacatecas, Mexico, was turned into an amusement park-type of attraction with an underground disco. Patrons take the old mine train from the entrance and pass the centuries old chapel with flowers and burning candles still honoring the miners who lost there lives there underground.

In Paris, tourists line up to explore the Catacombs, and not too long ago they also went on underground sewer tours.

Here in Buenos Aires are forgotten old tunnels as well. El Zanjón de Granados, on Defensa in San Telmo, is 150 meters of tunnels, 4 meters wide, dating from the beginning of the 19th century. And under the Manzana de las Luces are Jesuit tunnels even older.

I’m not a spelunker, or cave explorer. I don’t belong to any narrow gauge or steam train club. I don’t search out the roller coasters of the world. I’m not about to climb into an old well or abandoned mineshaft.

I’m just going to keep on taking the A Train. It’s not hard to imagine, as the train appears from nowhere in the station, that the next stop is somewhere ethereal and strange. I take my seat and vanish into history.

The first tango dancing I ever saw was on stage at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. It was 1986 and I saw Tango Argentino, which later changed my life along with that of so many other future tango aficianados. We were impressed with the entire show, but especially by the lead couple--Gloria y Eduardo Arquimbau.

On my first visit to Buenos Aires in 1997, I came on a Tango Tour which included classes with Gloria y Eduardo in La Confiteria Ideal and a tango dinner show at Michelangelo in a gorgeous antique brick building in San Telmo where they still perform.

Here the legendary couple is dancing a milonga at Sunderland in 2009. Still today they travel internationally giving classes at festivals and workshops. They are old-school, stage dancers who choreograph their routines as opposed to milongueros who dance social tango, but their performance quality, energy and personalities make them always entertaining to watch. Gloria y Eduardo Arquimbau are classic. As they themselves say, Forty years of dancing tango is not nothing!
Because the topic of shoes is never out of date, I'm republishing this post from 2007. Some things never change.

How tall am I ? Honey with hair, heels and attitude, I'm through this dammed roof! --Ru Paul

My sexy shoes are black silk stilettos
with an ankle strap. They are also my tango shoes which, depending on
my partner and my point of view, can be the same thing. I first realized
a few years ago why high heels are so sexy: they make our legs look
longer, sure, but the real reason is that they make us more vulnerable.
We can’t run away. (Or it looks like we can’t.)

But amazingly we
can dance in them, which takes practice and skill. We must remember just
how high the heels are so that we can go up on our toes and down again
without whacking the heel. We have to learn how to keep those heels 1/4”
off the floor, and to put them down with control so that the wood
doesn’t clunk and we can spin like dervishes during the tropical tanda.

Dancing shoes have a mystique all their own. There’s no way we can
dance ballet, tango, jazz or salsa without the right shoes. Well we can,
but we don’t want to. If our feet are looking good, well then, we’re
going to be dancing great. We’re more than half-way home.

In Cuba,
the salsa homeland, where they don’t have the right shoes for anything,
they dance in whatever or even in no shoes, but it’s no problem. If
fact, our fancy specialized shoes seem kind of silly down there, where
the best dancers are torching the floor in sneakers and old sandals.

But in the hot salsa clubs and smoldering tango salons both to the north and south of the Equator, looking the part
is part of it. And it all begins with the barest, strappiest, sexiest
shoes we can spin in, and if they match our outfits, so much the better.

We pick glittery and jeweled shoes
(or white) if we have great footwork and are proud of it. The rest of
us go for basic black if we don’t want glow-in-the-dark feet, but also,
what is more sexy than black? And it goes with everything.

Soul to sole: what about Reflexology,
when pressure is applied to certain areas of the bottom of the feet to
promote relaxation and healing in other parts of the body?
Is that why we feel so great after an amazing night of dancing wearing the right shoes?

Your dancing shoes can have soles of suede, smooth leather, felt, rubber—depending
on your feet and the floor you are dancing on. If you aren’t happy with
the soles you’ve got, you can take the shoes to a cobbler and he can
put on a different kind. As for your dancing soul, just let it out!

Unlike soles, which are of light-to-medium interest, heel height
is a huge and passionate issue. Whenever a group of women huddle
together at a milonga, if they’re not gossiping about a man, it’s heels
of another sort that have their attention. (Actually the higher heel
helps us to keep our weight forward in tango, so there’s more than
aesthetics involved.) Sometimes short women like to wear the highest of
the high (over 4 inches) and even platforms, and tall women opt for
lower altitude.

I am tall (5’ 7”) and it has actually happened to
me that a man has told me I’m a great dancer and he’d love to ask me to
dance, but I am too tall! (How rude is that? I’m not too tall, he is
too short!)

One night at The Mayan
in Los Angeles years ago, a man invited me to dance, and when I stood
up in my stilettos, he looked panic stricken as he gazed upward to the
top of my head. Then he told me his recurring nightmare was to dance
with a woman taller than he. But when we got into the groove, he loved
it! Dance after dance, he tried new spins, lifts, jumps and dives. I
finally had to beat him off with a clave!! He was overjoyed to realize
he could dance well and have fun with a tall partner! He wasn’t exactly
my mercy dance of the evening; I had fun, but I looked on the experience
as educational for him--he will never hesitate to ask a tall woman to
dance again.

A lot of women of my distance from the ground choose
low-heeled shoes to minimize any height difference and to perhaps get
more dances. I’m sorry, but I think you should wear the shoes that are right for you,
that you dance fabulous in, that make your feet even more gorgeous and
sexy. If a man can’t handle how tall or short you are wearing them,
that’s his problem.

But for hot moments
after the dance, we just need to know how to gracefully get undressed
with those shoes on. Sometimes we go to bed wearing our shoes, and then
we have to not forget that we are wearing stilettos that might get
buried in some guy’s torso, or worse.

We have to know all these
things about our sexy shoes. And even if we look vulnerable, we must
learn not to be. Sometimes we can even take those shoes off.
Once in a while we get out of our rut of attending our favorite milongas, and recently we went to two that I've never attended, although Ruben has. As a matter of fact, many years ago he used to organize a milonga at one of them.

So we went to the Milonga de Elsita at Plaza Bohemia (5-10 p.m., Fridays, 2540 Alsina) one dark and stormy night with some students. Even though it was pouring down rain (outside and inside) there were lots of familiar faces on the floor, some I hadn't seen in ages. The level of dancing was quite high. The ambiance was cozy and warm, and Elsita very welcoming. My only complaint besides the leaking ceiling was the floor, of course made worse by the water. It is very hard tile.

On Saturday night after attending Los Consagrados we went to Bomberos de Lanus (Bld. Gral. Rodriquez 1039. Lanus E), actually in the firehouse. I've always wanted to go there as firemen are my heroes. (Unfortunately none of the firemen attend the milonga!) This salon is where Ruben used to organize a milonga many years ago. This is a typical club de barrio where everyone knows each other and dance lots of cumbia and merengue as well as tango; not a place to attend solo in hopes of cabeceo'ing partners. The floor is wonderful, like in Lo de Celia; not wood but smooth tile to glide over.
We are almost at the end of the Tango Championship Season (or the World Cup of Tango as they now call it). It's controversial every year, but getting less so as everyone in Buenos Aires is just a bit tired of it...well the real tango lovers in the city and dancers who live the tango all year round.

The Argentina Independent, a fun and informative online newspaper recently gone to paper as well, published an article that tries to show the various points of view, that of yours truly tangocherie included. Check out Tourism and Tango: Dream Partners or Four Left Feet?
Ruben and I were invited to the Gala Milonga at the Region Leonesa of Susana Miller's annual Milongueando Festival.
We love this ballroom--the home of the Milonga de los Consagrados on Saturday afternoons where we are a permanent fixture. It's always fun to see a crowd that is completely different from the usual Buenos Aires milonga suspects, as it was probably 90% foreigners.

Being there last night proves how no matter if the salon is the same, each milonga has its own personality based on the organizers, dancers, the DJ, the lighting, sound system, arrangement of tables and chairs, and even the tablecloths. It seems weird that it's so, but last night the ambiance was 100% different from Los Cons on Saturdays.
Although we love the ballroom, the event wasn't our cup of tea last night--lights very dim, bad sound, everyone grouped together with no way to cabeceo. There were exhibitions by Maria Plazaola y Ricardo Viqueira, Susana Miller y Chiche Ruberto, with special guest stars, Eduardo y Gloria--the first tango dancers I ever saw when they performed in Tango Argentino at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles in 1986. Now we are neighbors in the barrio of Boedo. Life is funny.
The well-known guitarist Esteban Morgado and violinist Quique Condomi of Tanghetto, Esteban Morgado Quarteto, and other recordings, took center floor and played several wonderful renditions of familiar pieces. My favorite was the smash-up of Paul McCartney's "Blackbird' with the tango "Uno." Below is a video from YouTube of another performance, but unfortunately it cuts off right after the tango begins. Last night's passionate rendition was so much better than this video, sorry that I didn't record it. I'm also sorry that the photos are not the greatest, the fault of the lighting, distance, the camera, and my lack of expertise. But you get the idea.

Here's the photo of the musicians from my point of view, which was unfortunately the back, but their sound was fantastic and professional, unlike the music for dancing.
I wrote about "tango clothes" several years ago, and strangely enough it's still one of our most popular posts: What Not to Wear to the Milonga.

That just shows you that this topic of dressing yourself is never out of date.

However the post itself is rather dated. Many, many students write to me before their arrival in Buenos Aires to ask where can they buy "tango dresses." So it's time I update "What to Wear to a Milonga" for the tanguera fashionistas, because it's a whole new world out there!

We women being as we are, whenever we get into a new activity we must first get the wardrobe. Proper ski clothes, yoga pants, Muy Thai shorts and jasmine garlands, flamenco nailed shoes and ruffled long skirts, there's a catalogue and and hundreds of choices available for every endeavor. God forbid we wear what we find in the back of our closet until we learn the fundamentals.
When I was belly dancing professionally, several girls in my troop admitted they were in it for the costuming opportunities. For me, I resented the time I needed to make up, as I was in it for the dancing.

Not that I don't understand the fun and psychology of buying lots of new stuff because your life is soon going to change with this new activity you're taking up, and we all know that the tango certainly can change your life. But I would just like to stress caution here; before we need the Comme Il Faut shoes and the "tango clothes," we need to learn to dance. A tanguera was never made (except perhaps in the movies) by wardrobe. The truth is, if you take a beginner and put her into a slinky gown by Mimi Pinzon, for example, a gown made for stage performances but which most traveling tangueras think of as a "tango dress," she's going to look ridiculous on the milonga floor--except maybe back home where she may wow the locals with her Buenos Aires threads.

In Buenos Aires

So here in BsAs, "tango dresses" tend to be sparkly, have fringe and/or beading, and high slits up the thigh. What real women wear to the milongas are nice dresses suitable to the season, often with a floaty or swingy skirt, and a pretty top--an outfit appropriate perhaps to going out to a nice restaurant (although here, except for dancing, one wears jeans/pants everywhere). Some women do wear pants to the milonga but it's only successful if they have perfect apple asses.

Pretty skirts and dresses are the norm, but so are gorgeous tango shoes. That is the area of importance. Often a man will look first at a woman's shoes before trying to cabeceo her; faulty shoes = a faulty dancer in most folks' minds.

Outside of Buenos Aires (and within in the very young milongas) the dress codes are different. The attitude is, "if you're young and you've got it, flaunt it" and wear as little as possible. So the new designers for tango come up with little fairy outfits held together by silken threads, baring as much as possible. These dresses are exquisite on a young dancer with a perfect body and who also dances exquisitely. If you're a beginner but look great in the outfit, wear it with a coverup to a wedding and save it until your dancing reaches the same level before you try it out at a milonga. Believe me, wearing the kit without the technique to back it up, makes you look a whole lot worse.

One design aspect that has always been important is that your outfit has back interest. When your chest is pressed up against your partner, the only thing essential about the front of your bodice is that there is no pin or bulky buttons or corsage sticking into either one of you.

Now more than ever, people are wearing skirts that accentuate the derriere of the dancer while the upper back is almost completely bare. This can look great, but many of the milongueros are uncomfortable embracing a woman with a totally bare back. In the old days, they carried a folded handkerchief in their palms to avoid sweating on the lady's skin.

Please take a look at the photos in my previous post on What Not to Wear. Not only do we want our clothing to be "dance-proof," which means we can raise our arms up comfortably without causing havoc at our waistlines or hemlines, but we don't want to look like "mutton dressed as lamb" or worse, tarts.

And for you guys out there, please leave your Carlos Gardel drag at home; no fedoras, no white scarves, and, sorry, unless you're dancing canyengue or swing, no black and white shoes. We can't even talk about red, blue, or golden glitter shoes so close to dinnertime.
Elegance is the goal--in our appearance and in our dancing.
Today is Armenian Constitution Day, and a perfect time to blog about a new milonga venue in Buenos Aires. Right across the street on calle Armenia from the historic Club Armenia where the infamous La Viruta milonga takes place, is the Armenian church hall, Sala Siranush, the elegant new home of La Milonguita on Wednesday nights. In this part of Palermo there are many Armenian culture clubs and restaurants.

My book isn't the only Church of Tango!
Here is the second installment of Fernando and Daniel's informative bilingual Tango series on BACast podcasts, which you can download and subscribe to on iTunes.

It's bilingual but not translated, so if you have some Spanish listen hard to the experts speaking rapid Castellano. Less wacky and funny than Part I, there is a lot of information to be had here from pros who know what they're talking about, and they illustrate their charla with music samples. One point that hit home with me is that you can play perfectly a tango from a score, but it still isn't "tango" without a certain feeling, rhythmic emphasis that isn't written down on the sheet music.

Ruben and I enjoyed contributing to The Laws of Tango, Part I: The Dance.
Part III promises to be extremely interesting as it's about tango lyrics and philosophy. Can't wait.

(Don't give up listening because of the rather long commercial at the beginning for the Chili Cook-off on July 1st.) Just endure; it's worth it to get to the good stuff.
