Hi Nancy, thanks for your comment. I wish you could be there too for moral support. And to ask some interesting questions.

I'm going to read from Chapter 1, the arrival in Paris, then in the middle, my first visit to Buenos Aires, and then on leaving Mexico to come here.

It was a bit tough to choose sections interesting and indicative of the book as a whole yet not too "intimate."

I hope I've selected the right ones.

You guys make me feel so good because you find my story helpful. That's why I wrote my memoir...to encourage people not to give up, to hang in there, and to have hope for the future no matter what happens. From great happiness including our dream holiday to Italy and Tango on the streets of Rome last October, and then 17 weeks later she died and here I am with two young boys - feeling like my heart has been ripped out. Sorry I was unclear. I didn't mean to suggest the locals dont't talk about codigos. Just that they don't talk of them as Laws, Contracts etc. "Honour amongst men" sounds much more more like it.

I can well see how your European was surprised. Here in Europe, many would see aksing a girl's guy for permission as implying she was his chattel. In BA that might be respectful of the guy - here it would be disrespectful of the girl.

I certainly look forward to reading the book.

And as far as Argentines talking about the codes, Ruben has referred to the "codigos de milongueros" which is more like "honor among men."

Perhaps the locals don't talk about the codigos, but in traditional milongas they all observe them. It's the foreigners (not just Norte Americanos) who find them so new and surprising, and thus, talk about them a lot. I remember once a European man at our table almost fell off his chair when a man asked Ruben's permission to dance with me.

Cheries, only the first third of this documentary is about dancing. The others are "The Laws of Tango Part 2: Music" and "The Laws of Tango Part 3: Lyrics/Philosophy" and those are well outside the scope of the milonga codes.

Having said which, I won't be surprised to hear those two American tango tour operators tell us otherwise. The presenter did say his programmes are intended to make us laugh! :)

Hi Cherie, I just want to clarify something: They are two different groups. In Argentina, we call tanguero to someone who loves tango, usually a tango expert, the type of person who listen tango all the time, a classic tango lover. Also, a musician who plays tango is called a tanguero. A tanguero not necessarily go to the milongas and most of the time they don’t dance. Milonguero in the other hand, is someone who grow up in the milongas.
